Drying column chemical tower important internal wire mesh demister
Wire Mesh Demister Mist Eliminators Standard Specification
1.General introduction of wire mesh demister
Demister pads or Mist eliminators are porous blankets of metal or plastic knitted wire mesh, designed and constructed for the efficient, economical removal of entrained liquid droplets from vapor streams. Demister Pads can be fabricated in any required size and shape and may be installed in new or existing process vessels.
2. How Wire Mesh Demister Works?
When vapor and entrained liquid droplets pass through a mist eliminator, the vapor moves freely through the mesh pad but the liquid droplets, due to their greater inertia, cannot make the necessary sharp turns and as a result are thrown into contact with the wire surfaces and briefly held there. As more droplets enter the pad and collect on the wires, they grow in size, run down the wire to the bottom surface of the mesh separator and fall from the unit. Overhead vapor is now free of entrained liquid.
3.Wire Mesh Materials
3.1Metallic Mesh Pads
Materials for metallic Mist Eliminators are as per customer need. Type 304 or Type 316 mesh pads can be in accordance with ASTM A-478. Monel mesh pads can be in accordance with ASTM B-164.
3.2Non-metallic Mist Eliminators
Non-metallic Mist Eliminators shall be PTFE or polypropylene as specified in by customer.
3.3Supports
A.Supports welded to the vessel shall be the same material as the shell. Where the shell is lined, supports welded to the lining shall be the same material as the lining.
B.Supports not welded to the shell (e.g. beams) shall be the same material as the Mist Eliminator.
3.4Grids
A.Metallic grids can be the same material as the mesh pad
B.For non-metallic mesh pads, the grids shall be carbon steel, coated with the same material as the mesh pad.
3.5Fastening Devices
A.For metallic mesh pads the wire ties or other fastening devices shall be of the same material as the Mist Eliminator. For non-metallic mesh pads, the grids shall be carbon steel, coated with the same material as the mesh pad.
B.For non-metallic mesh pads the wire ties can be the same material as the mesh pad.
4. Demister mesh density and its applications
Mesh density (stainless steel) |
Application |
50 kg/m3 | Heavy fouling, e.g. evaporators |
80 kg/m3 | Moderate fouling, e.g. vessel boilers |
110 kg/m3 | Light fouling |
145 kg/m3 | Heavy duty, e.g. oil and gas separators |
170 kg/m3 | General purpose, not totally clean |
195 kg/m3 | Optimum efficiency & pressure drop |
240 kg/m3 | High density with high separation efficiency |
112 kg/m3 | General purpose, clean service |
145 kg/m3 | Find droplet removal in clean service |
